On Creation

Not all sources agree about the nature of the gods, or about their history. Each culture has its own creation myths, and there is no definitive story, but the earliest known records are kept in the great Moon Tower of Skeld.

Creation of the Primal Gods

In the beginning, there existed only the primordial darkness, a vast expanse of nothingness where neither light nor life could penetrate. Within this darkness lay the slumbering essence of the All-Father, the progenitor of all existence. From the depths of his eternal rest, the All-Father stirred, his thoughts swirling with the desire to bring forth life and light into the void.

With a mighty roar, the All-Father rent the darkness asunder, casting forth his divine energy into the void. From this celestial eruption, the first beings were born – colossal creatures of unimaginable power and majesty, beings of pure elemental essence who would come to be revered as the primal gods.

From the depths of the All-Father’s mind emerged the Earth Serpent, a colossal entity whose sinuous form coiled throughout the void, its scales shimmering with the essence of creation. With each undulation of its body, the Earth Serpent brought forth the fertile soil and the deep caverns, laying the foundation upon which life would flourish.

Simultaneously, the thoughts of the All-Father birthed the Four Seasons, embodiments of the ever-turning cycle of time and nature.

The Winter King, cloaked in frost and ice, brought the chill of winter with his icy breath, covering the land in a blanket of snow and ice. His domain was one of solitude and introspection, where life slumbered beneath the frozen earth, awaiting the promise of renewal.

The Lady of Spring, adorned in robes of blossoms and greenery, emerged with the gentle warmth of her touch, coaxing life back into the world after the long slumber of winter. With each step, flowers bloomed, and trees burst forth with new leaves, filling the air with the sweet scent of rebirth.

The Summer Lord, radiant and powerful, ruled over the bountiful warmth of summer, his presence bringing life and vitality to the land. Under his benevolent gaze, fields ripened with golden grain, and forests teemed with life, echoing with the songs of birds and the laughter of children.

Finally, the Autumn Queen, draped in hues of gold and crimson, brought forth the season of harvest and reflection. As she walked, leaves turned to burnished gold and fiery red, falling gently to the earth like tears shed for the passing of time. Yet, in their falling, they nourished the soil, preparing it for the cycle of renewal to come.

Among these divine beings the All-Father ruled, and was also known as the Skyfather, whose breath gave birth to the heavens and the stars.  From his celestial perch high above the realms, he gazed upon all that he had wrought with eyes that beheld the infinite expanse of creation. With each dawn and dusk, he painted the skies with hues of azure and crimson, a testament to his boundless power and eternal watchfulness over the tapestry of existence. And as the winds whispered his name and the stars danced in homage to his divine presence, the All-Father remained ever vigilant, a silent sentinel presiding over the wonders of his creation.

The Mythos of Creation – Shaping of Worlds

As these primal gods roamed the nascent world, they shaped and molded it according to their whims.  With the foundations of the world laid, the primal gods roamed the burgeoning landscape, their every step bringing forth new wonders. From the towering peaks of the mountains to the deepest ocean trenches, they infused the world with their divine essence, molding it into a place of beauty and potential.

The Earth Serpent, with its endless coils, carved rivers and valleys, its movements forming the foundations of the earth. The Winter King blanketed the peaks with snow, bringing forth the chill of winter, while the Lady of Spring awakened the land with her touch, adorning it with blossoms and greenery.

The Summer Lord bathed the world in warmth and light, encouraging growth and abundance, and the Autumn Queen, with her golden hues, prepared the land for rest and renewal. Together, the primal gods ensured the harmony and balance of the natural world, setting the stage for the arrival of mortals and the future deities who would guide them.

Then the primal gods, seeking to fill their creation with beings of great power and wisdom, gave birth to the Firstborn—giants and dragons.  And thus, in the dawn of time, life sprang forth from the darkness, guided by the hands of the divine. These mighty races were the first to walk the world, their presence a testament to the grandeur of the gods.

From the strength of the mountains and the solidity of the earth, the primal gods sculpted the giants. Towering beings of immense strength and endurance, the giants embodied the raw, unyielding power of the natural world. They were the guardians of the land, shaping the terrain with their hands and crafting vast landscapes of forests, valleys, and plains. The giants were beings of great wisdom and reverence for the earth, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the seasons and the cycles of the land.

From the flames of the sun and the breath of the winds, the primal gods forged the dragons. Majestic and fearsome, the dragons were creatures of both destruction and creation, their fiery breath capable of razing mountains or birthing new life from the ashes. They soared through the skies, their wings spanning the horizon, and dove into the depths of the oceans, their presence a bridge between the heavens and the earth.

The Illenaer

Yet, despite their power and splendor, the primal gods knew that their creation was not yet complete. To truly bring life to the world, they needed to bestow upon it the spark of consciousness. And so, from the essence of their own divine selves, they crafted the second born – beings of flesh and blood, gifted with the capacity for thought and emotion.

For these second born, another set of deities were needed and thus, from the essence of the natural elements and the primordial energies of creation, the Illenaer were born.

The Illenaer, lesser gods of profound power and wisdom, embodied the very essence of the world itself. And so, the Illenaer took their place alongside the primal gods as guardians and stewards of the world, weaving their own destinies into the tapestry of existence with each passing age.

As mortals continued to flourish and expand their understanding of the world, their reverence and aspirations gave rise to a new pantheon of lesser deities known as the Vashtaur.

Born from the collective hopes, dreams, and aspirations of mortals, the Vashtaur emerged as embodiments of specialized aspects of life and existence. Each Vashtaur deity represented a specific domain or facet of the mortal experience, acting as stewards and guides for those who sought their favor.

The Vashtaur, though lesser in stature compared to the primal gods and the Illenaer, played a vital role in the lives of mortals, offering guidance, protection, and inspiration in times of need. As mortal civilizations flourished and evolved, so too did the pantheon of Vashtaur, growing and adapting to reflect the ever-changing desires and aspirations of those who worshiped them.
