As told by father Beowin….
The Staff of Dragons is a combination of four different magic items, each a powerful item in their own right; but combined, the Staff of Dragons is made. The staff is thousands of years old and in the distant past all 4 sections were split up by the victorious humans and elves and hidden in different locations to hinder any attempts to recreate the staff.
In current times, the first mention of the Staff of Dragons surfaced in an adventurer’s chest along with the map of the Dragonforge Mountain. Later while investigating the Dragonforge in the Norgaard library an old scroll was found that showed that the location of the Dragonforge was on an island far to the north. It was also learned that the forge is controlled by the magical Staff of Dragons. The Dragonforge is rumored to be the only place where the magical metal known as Dragonsteel can be forged. Ulric Karnorian’s broken sword, Carencir, “the King Maker” can only be re-forged there.
While investigating the Staff of Dragons, it was learned that a merchant in the old Valmaran fortress of Norgaard had information on the location of one of the sections of the Staff. The merchant, Jairus Turez-Ghul, claimed that one of the sections was being guarded in a monastery high in the Frost Guard Mountains. But before the section could be gained by agents of Ulric, the merchant double crossed those sent to find it and stole the section of the Staff of Dragons for himself.
The second section of the Staff of Dragons was discovered to be in the hands of the Drow in their underdark city of Amulbanath. With the destruction of the Drow city by the elves of the Frostwood Forest, the section fell into the hands of a creature of the shadow realm.
With the second section out of reach, Ulric concentrated on the first piece. Ulric learned that the Norgaard merchant Jairus, sold the first piece to Dracanas and the section was taken to Jandusar. Unfortunately for Ulric, before he could make any plans to steal the first section from Dracanas, he and his army was defeated at Barac-Tor. With his defeat, Ulric was also imprisoned in the city of Jandusar.
With Ulric’s defeat, the newly founded Dragonknights in their ancient hideaway Mons Dracanor, decided on a daring mission. A mission to not only rescue their leader, Ulric Kanorian; but to steal the first section of the Staff of Dragons from Dracanas. A small group of adventurers infiltrated the prison and rescued Ulric and retrieved the first section of the Staff of Dragons from the High Priest of Kor. They only barely escaped when it was learned that Ulric Kanorian is actually a gold dragon and they escaped from the city upon his back.
With the escape of Ulric and the loss of the first section of the Staff of Dragons, Dracanas learned about Ulric’s plan to re-forge his sword. With the remade sword, Ulric could show his legitimate claim to the Kingdom of DhanKanath to the people. Dracanas started to make plans to stop this from happening.
With a stroke of luck, the third section of the Staff of Dragons was located far to the north near the city of Kallekot. The Dragonknights, Malazar and Jace travelled north on their dragons and retrieved the third section right before the Frost Giants sent by Dracanas could destroy the village and steal the piece. Now Ulric had two of the 4 pieces of the staff.
With first and third sections in hand, Ulric sent his most trusted adventurers to recover the second section from the ruined Drow city. With he help of a drider named Imrazir, those sent by Ulric were led to the ruined city of Amulbanath where they fought and defeated Daurgoloth, a Shadow Dragon; and they returned to the surface and presented the 2nd section to Ulric. Ulric thought that he had all of the sections of the staff; but unknown to all there was actually a 4th section.
Ulric brought forth all 3 pieces of the Dragon Staff and he says, “Once again we all have to thank all who have participated in retrieving the 3 sections of this staff. Now that we have all three pieces the hope was that we could start looking into re-forging the Sword of Kings; but there is a small problem.“
He brought forth all three pieces and it can be plainly seen that there was a piece missing.
“As you can see, there is a 4th piece to the staff that nobody knew anything about. Over the past few months our spies have been researching this in the great library in Norgaard, in the archives in Jandusar and in the ancient library here. We have learned that the key to the whole staff lies in the staff’s core. The core is a metal section about 6 inches in length and it joins the bottom two pieces of the staff with the top piece. We now must locate this core.”
“Our spies in Jandusar have brought us a couple of pieces of news in regards to this quest. First off, we are not the only ones looking for the core; we have learned that Dracanas is searching for the core as well. Obviously he does not want the Sword of Kings to be remade because he knows that it will prove my claim to the crown, so Dracanas and his forces will do everything that they can to obtain the core before we do. Lucky for us the key piece of information on the core was stolen by our spies just minutes before the Dragon King’s men came to that particular location in the great library in Norgaard.”
“I hold in my hand a passage from a journal from long ago, by a Valmaran warrior named Darius Coldshadow who took part in a great battle, which took place on what we now know as the Battlemoor. In this passage he mentions that his liege lord was buried in a tomb at the place of his death with his most precious relic, a relic that seems to be very similar in nature to the core that we seek. This leads us to believe that the core rests in one of the hundreds of tombs that litter the Battlemoor. Our spies have been busy and we have learned that the tomb in question is marked on the front with blood red runes.”
What happens next leads us to the passage that has already been told in Ulric and the Battlemoor.
