As told by Father Beowin…
The first mention of the name “Dracanas” came during the investigation of a magical item known as the Elfstone and it was learned that the Fire Elfstone was wielded many thousands of years ago by the elven champion Arfalas. Found in the words in his funeral dirge, the song immortalized how Arfalas battled the Valmaran Grand Master, Raeghar Blackfist and his massive black dragon, Dracanas Ebonscale atop the great volcano known as the Dragonforge. While blows fell on both sides, it was Raeghar who delivered the mortal blow with his mighty war spear through the heart of the elven hero. Arfalas knowing his wound was mortal, in his dying breath caused his Elfstone to explode sending deadly shards of the stone through both Raeghar and Dracanas, killing them both instantly.
In recent times, the High Chancellor to the Dragonking was also named Dracanas. Many believed at the time that this was just a mere coincidence. With the disappearance of the Dragonking, the High Chancellor began enacting his own policies within the Kingdom of DhanKanath. During this time, agents sent by Ulric to investigate the Staff of Dragons found a very important scroll in the headquarters of a Jandusar thieves guild. On the scroll they discovered damning information about the plot by Dracanas to rule the Kingdom of DhanKanath. The scroll was written by Dracanas and it was addressed to a red dragon named Rhaegothrax and it mentioned that Rhaegothrax’s red dragon brothers, Rhaegos and Tyranax were already somewhere in the Kingdom of DhanKanath. The scroll further went on to mention that a black dragon along with several blue dragons had also come to the kingdom in recent times. The scroll finally confirmed that the Barbarian King to the North, Icendrath the Mighty, to be a great white dragon. It seemed to Ulric that Dracanas was attempting to bring forth the “Rise of the Dragons” in the Kingdom of DhanKanath.
Soon after the discovery of the scroll in the thieves guild, it was confirmed by spies within the Dragonking’s own court that the High Chancellor Dracanas was indeed one and the same as the ancient steed of the Valmaran Grand Master. Somehow Dracanas was able to survive the shattering of the Elfstone and in some way transformed himself into one of the most deadliest of monsters, a dracolich.
Controlling DhanKanath was just a means to the end for Dracanas as ruling a human kingdom was not his ultimate goal. While ruling DhanKanath, Dracanas sent thousands of humans into the underdark so that their souls could be consumed by the Scepter of Souls. This too was just a tool that he needed to enact the final chapter of his plan. As it has been told in the story of Ulric and the Battlemoor, the Scepter of Souls shattered on a blood spilled ancient battleground became the catalyst to bring forth Dracanas’ ultimate plan, the release of the demon Baal unto this world.
